You may remember Moko, the playful, pygmy sperm whale-saving, lovable dolphin from New Zealand? I’ve just learned from a commenter that he was found dead July 8, 2010. While an autopsy is being done (because of the special nature this dolphin held with the local people), officials say there is no reason to suspect any malicious act, stressing that Moko was a wild dolphin and his death could be due to many things. The BBC reported nearly a year ago: But scientists are concerned about Moko’s welfare. In a recent study they found he had been scarred by boats and a fish hook. They pointed out that of the 30 “lone” dolphins identified around the world, 14 had already been injured or had died as a result of their interaction with humans. According to MSNBC and AP,
'Incredibly big concern' for ruptures, expert says of decision to delay work UPDATE 8PM HOUSTON — After a government review concluded that pressure tests of a new containment cap would not make the Gulf oil spill worse, BP on Wednesday started the process to begin testing — raising hopes once again that the flow could be stopped nearly three months after the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion. Kent Wells, a BP senior vice president, said at a Wednesday evening news briefing that the valve on the top portion of the cap had been shut, meaning the oil had stopped pouring out from there. Live video of the cap a mile below the Gulf surface confirmed a significantly reduced flow. The full "integrity test" will begin when the flow of oil stops coming out of the cap, a BP spokesman told NBC News. On its Twitter feed Wednesday, BP reported a leak was detected and isolated in a pipe on the cap and the test won't begin until that is repaired. Retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the Obama administration's point man on the disaster, said the government gave the go-ahead after carefully reviewing the risks. "I want to do something that I think has never been done before," Ms Bright says. "I want to stand as mayor to help organise a rates revolt in order to help stop this corporate takeover – because that's what the supercity is. "I would do everything I could to make it unworkable." The 55-year-old self-professed investigative activist and public watchdog says ratepayers are being forced into an amalgamated city that many don't want. "Under law, we were entitled to a binding poll which never happened," she says. "We want the legislation repealed." Ms Bright, who once worked as a welding tutor at Manukau Polytechnic is a founding member of the 1998 Water Pressure Group. But her history of activism spans more than 35 years. The Kingsland resident has never been married and continues to fight on issues she's passionate about. It's a fulltime job. "My house is freehold and I get $150 a week from my flatmate," she says. "I have been in this situation and self-funded for the last 10 years." This will be her second shot at public office. "Ten years ago I stood for the water pressure group in the 2000 Avondale-Mt Roskill byelection," she says. "I got 6500 votes, just 700 votes behind Noelene Raffills and nearly caused an upset." Ms Bright has been arrested 22 times and says she beat all but one charge in court. She plans to appeal the resulting criminal conviction for trespassing at the town hall before the United Nations. It is, she says, a matter of principle. "I was denied speaking rights at a meeting where I wanted to talk about the supercity in November 2006. "My fight against the supercity goes back some time and I've put my neck out to the point of arrest," she says. The local body elections run from from September 17 to October 9. Mayoral candidate Penny Bright is an activist with a long track record, today she's showing us how to stop METRO WATER using their tactic of water restriction against those who are disputing or unable to pay their water rates. This is corporate extortion at its worst and down and dirty activism at its best! Good on ya Penny! MR NEWS
Due to popular rage at the ban on reporters and photographers from within 65 feet of the oil spill, Coast Guard admiral Thad Allen has rescinded the ban.
Specifically, Allen announced tonight that the media will have full access, as long as they do not interfere with safety or security: National Incident Commander Admiral Thad Allen today announced new procedures to allow media free travel within the 20-meter boom safety zones if they have followed simple procedures for credentialing, and provided they follow certain rules and guidelines. "I have put out a direction that the press are to have clear, unfettered access to this event, with two exceptions -- if there is a safety or security concern," said Allen. “This boom is critical to the defense of the marshes and the beaches.” "We need to discriminate between media, which have a reason to be there and somebody who's hanging around when we know that we've had equipment vital to this region damaged," Allen said. Previously, media were required to contact local authorities each time they wished to access booming operations. The 20-meter safety zone was created to prevent boats from going over the top of booms; it is not intended to limit media access. This step will further expand media access to frontlines of the BP oil spill response, and ensure that media representatives have the access they need to report this historic response-while maintaining the effectiveness of more than 560 miles of protective boom currently deployed to protect sensitive shorelines along the Gulf Coast. A credential will be issued for media representatives to carry and display as needed for the duration of the response. Media representatives can obtain credentials by providing their name, media affiliation, and contact information to the Unified Area Command Joint Information Center at UACNOLAJIC@gmail.com. The credential outlines safety and security guidelines for media access-including adherence to all federal, state and local navigation rules and regulations, and other common-sense guidelines designed to protect boom while keeping everyone safe. "We have provided unprecedented media access to the largest oil spill response in US history. We want the media and the public to see the tremendous unity of effort of 40,000 federal, state and local responders. We have provided hundreds of embarks on CG vessels and aircraft and we are offering overnight visits on a 210-foot Cutter forty miles offshore at the well site. We believe that by providing the media credentials for vessels, we will increase the ability of the media and the public to see the response effort," said Captain Jim McPherson, USCG spokesman. Reporters who are denied access to any part of the response can call the UAC JIC at (713) 323-1670 for immediate assistance. Congratulations to photographers like Julie Dermansky, who have tirelessly documented what's really going on. Congratulations to Anderson Cooper, who showed that a mainstream reporter can demand access. Congratulations to the First Amendment. The National Inflation Association today issued a warning to all Americans that empty store shelves will likely be coming to America as a result of government price controls during the upcoming hyperinflationary crisis. This morning, NIA released a video preview of what hyperinflation will look like in the U.S. This extremely important must see video is now available on NIA's video page at: http://inflation.us/videos.html
NIA's six-minute video released today goes into detail about an event that took place just outside of Boston, Massachusetts in May of this year. This story was widely ignored by the nationwide mainstream media, but NIA believes it was one of the most important news events of the first half of 2010. Although this particular crisis in Boston was due to decaying infrastructure, NIA believes a currency crisis will lead to the same type of panic on a nationwide basis. NIA hopes that this video serves as a wake-up call for Americans to take the necessary steps to prepare for hyperinflation and become educated about the U.S. economy. In Zimbabwe during hyperinflation, Zimbabweans were forced to transact in gold and silver. It's only a matter of time before the U.S. dollar becomes worthless and the only Americans with wealth will be those who own gold and silver. Citizens of Boston were able to survive their recent crisis with the help of the National Guard, but the National Guard won't be there for Americans during hyperinflation. 40.2 million Americans are currently living off of food stamps, but food stamps won't have any purchasing power during hyperinflation. The United States' day of reckoning is ahead. We cannot go on living with record budget deficits and accelerating national debt growth forever. Just yesterday it was announced that for the first time ever, a major credit ratings agency has given China a higher credit rating than the U.S. While most credit ratings agencies including Moody's, Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings still rate U.S. debt as AAA, NIA believes the real credit rating of the U.S. should be junk. The only way one could possibly justify a U.S. credit rating of AAA is by taking into account the Federal Reserve's ability to monetize our debt through inflation. However, printing money to pay off debt is a lot worse than defaulting on it. Inflation is very deceptive, it destroys the value of savings while transferring wealth from the poor and middle class to the rich. The U.S. has a budget deficit just from Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid alone. NIA urges President Obama to implement dramatic cuts to these entitlement programs immediately, while simultaneously reducing the size of government across the board. Time is growing short for Obama to rein in government spending. The longer Obama waits to reverse course, the harder it will be for the U.S. to recover from the calamity that is about to unfold. In the end, the artificial sweetener was approved, not on scientific grounds, but rather because of strong political and financial pressure. After all, aspartame was previously listed by the Pentagon as a biochemical warfare agent! It's hard to believe such a chemical would be allowed into the food supply, but it was, and it has been wreaking silent havoc with people's health for the past 30 years. The truth is, it should never have been released onto the market, and allowing it to remain in the food chain is seriously hurting people -- no matter how many times you rebrand it under fancy new names. The Deceptive Marketing of Aspartame Sold commercially under names like NutraSweet, Canderel and now AminoSweet, aspartame can be found in more than 6,000 foods, including soft drinks, chewing gum, table-top sweeteners, diet and diabetic foods, breakfast cereals, jams, sweets, vitamins, prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Aspartame producer Ajinomoto chose to rebrand it under the name AminoSweet, to "remind the industry that aspartame tastes just like sugar, and that it's made from amino acids -- the building blocks of protein that are abundant in our diet." Read the rest here at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mercola/americas-deadliest-sweete_b_630549.html (NaturalNews) In response to growing awareness about the dangers of artificial sweeteners, what does the manufacturer of one of the world's most notable artificial sweeteners do? Why, rename it and begin marketing it as natural, of course. This is precisely the strategy of Ajinomoto, maker of aspartame, which hopes to pull the wool over the eyes of the public with its rebranded version of aspartame, called "AminoSweet".
Over 25 years ago, aspartame was first introduced into the European food supply. Today, it is an everyday component of most diet beverages, sugar-free desserts, and chewing gums in countries worldwide. But the tides have been turning as the general public is waking up to the truth about artificial sweeteners like aspartame and the harm they cause to health. The latest aspartame marketing scheme is a desperate effort to indoctrinate the public into accepting the chemical sweetener as natural and safe, despite evidence to the contrary. Aspartame was an accidental discovery by James Schlatter, a chemist who had been trying to produce an anti-ulcer pharmaceutical drug for G.D. Searle & Company back in 1965. Upon mixing aspartic acid and phenylalanine, two naturally-occurring amino acids, he discovered that the new compound had a sweet taste. The company merely changed its FDA approval application from drug to food additive and, voila, aspartame was born. G.D. Searle & Company first patented aspartame in 1970. An internal memo released in the same year urged company executives to work on getting the FDA into the "habit of saying yes" and of encouraging a "subconscious spirit of participation" in getting the chemical approved. G.D. Searle & Company submitted its first petition to the FDA in 1973 and fought for years to gain FDA approval, submitting its own safety studies that many believed were inadequate and deceptive. Despite numerous objections, including one from its own scientists, the company was able to convince the FDA to approve aspartame for commercial use in a few products in 1974, igniting a blaze of controversy. In 1976, then FDA Commissioner Alexander Schmidt wrote a letter to Sen. Ted Kennedy expressing concern over the "questionable integrity of the basic safety data submitted for aspartame safety". FDA Chief Counsel Richard Merrill believed that a grand jury should investigate G.D. Searle & Company for lying about the safety of aspartame in its reports and for concealing evidence proving the chemical is unsafe for consumption. Despite the myriad of evidence gained over the years showing that aspartame is a dangerous toxin, it has remained on the global market with the exception of a few countries that have banned it. In fact, it continued to gain approval for use in new types of food despite evidence showing that it causes neurological brain damage, cancerous tumors, and endocrine disruption, among other things. The details of aspartame's history are lengthy, but the point remains that the carcinogen was illegitimately approved as a food additive through heavy-handed prodding by a powerful corporation with its own interests in mind. Practically all drugs and food additives are approved by the FDA not because science shows they are safe but because companies essentially lobby the FDA with monetary payoffs and complete the agency's multi-million dollar approval process. Changing aspartame's name to something that is "appealing and memorable", in Ajinomoto's own words, may hoodwink some but hopefully most will reject this clever marketing tactic as nothing more than a desperate attempt to preserve the company's multi-billion dollar cash cow. Do not be deceived. Natural News Link and Sources: http://www.naturalnews.com/028151_aspartame_sweeteners.html By KATE NEWTON and IAN STEWARD - The Dominion Post Anti-whaling activists appear to have struck a deal with Japanese officials allowing Pete Bethune to walk free – in return for banning him from future expeditions. Bethune, 45, who has been in Japanese custody since February after boarding a Japanese whaling ship, was given a two-year suspended sentence in a Tokyo court yesterday. The suspended sentence means he will not go to jail unless he commits another crime on Japanese soil in the next five years. He is expected to arrive back in New Zealand on Saturday. Japanese prosecutors and pro-whalers had pushed for a jail term for the Auckland sailor, who pleaded guilty in May to four charges of illegally boarding the Shonan Maru II, but denied a charge of assault. Prosecutors said rancid butter that Bethune threw at harpoon ships caused chemical burns to one whaler's face and hurt the eyes of several others. In June, he was banned from future Sea Shepherd Conservation Society expeditions to the Southern Ocean. The group's chief executive, Chuck Swift, said at the time that the ban was because Bethune broke Sea Shepherd policy by taking a bow and arrows on to the protest boat Ady Gil, which sank in January after colliding with the Japanese fleet. However, there are now suggestions that the ban was Sea Shepherd's part of a bargain that saw Bethune walk free. Sea Shepherd captain Paul Watson said last night that the organisation knew what the sentence was several days ago, "because we'd already arranged for Pete Bethune's air ticket". He was relieved at the sentence and said the ban on Bethune joining Sea Shepherd's campaigns was because of "a deal" with the Japanese. He did not elaborate on the terms of the deal and Sea Shepherd would not confirm last night whether the ban was in return for a suspended sentence. However, Bethune's wife, Sharyn, said that may have been the case. "I've heard that rumour too. Good if they did – it got him home." From Wikipedia...
Tim Selwyn (b. 1974, Takapuna) is a New Zealand political activist who was found guilty of sedition on June 8, 2006, the first person charged with sedition in New Zealand for more than 30 years.[1] He is also editor of Tumeke! magazine, and has a blog with the same name. He was sentenced to two months imprisonment for sedition and for conspiracy to commit wilful damage on July 19, 2006 as well as identity theft and tax fraud. Selwyn was also investigated by other government agencies after his initial arrest and was sentenced to a further 15 months for dishonesty offences and benefit fraud against various departments which had occurred more than 10 years beforehand (imposed at the time of the sedition sentence) [1] - and a further 25 months for tax offences (on 14 February 2007).[2] He was released from prison in October 2007.[3] Letters he wrote from prison were posted on his blog, prompting criticism and questions in Parliament from National's Corrections spokesman Simon Power.[4][5] Selwyn has previously attracted controversy. In 1996, he was imprisoned for falsifying nomination signatures and was forced to resign as a member of the Glenfield Community Board, to which he had been elected unopposed. [6] He also wrote articles in Craccum criticising suicide prevention workers[7] and explaining how to rip off the student loan system; the former being condemned by the New Zealand Press Council in a ruling as "consistently irresponsible and malicious." [8] - a decision Selwyn later criticised as "ill-considered and hypocritical."[9] Selwyn has previously been a member of the ACT Party, but more recently has supported the Maori Party[10]. He is well known for his Maori nationalist views and considers himself Maori despite being of European appearance and having no known fluency in the Maori language. These views are often articulated on his blog as anti-colonialist and anti-immigrant in contrast to the left wing views espoused by his co-blogger activist Bomber Bradbury. |
